Introduction: There is increasing of the incidence of chronic subdural hematomas\n(CSDH), due to increase of the elderly population with increase of\nintake oral anticoagulation and antiplatelet drugs in this category of patients.\nSeizures occur as a complication in 2.3% to 20.4% of the patients. There is a\nconsiderable side effect associated with using of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs).\nAim of the Study: To rule the value of prophylactic antiepileptic drugs in\nprevention of seizures after surgical evacuation of chronic subdural hematoma.\nMethods: A prospective controlled non-randomized study was performed\non 26 patients with chronic or subacute subdural hematoma that was\nsurgically evacuated through burr-holes from April 2017 to June 2019. We\ndivided the patients into 2 groups: group A patients received prophylactic antiepileptic\ndrugs for 6 month and group B patients didnâ??t receive prophylactic\nantiepileptic drugs and the 2 groups were observed to detect occurrence of\npost-operative seizures for 6-month follow-up after surgery. Medical history,\ndemographic data and imaging characteristics were recorded. Results: Seizure\nprevalence for all patients during hospitalization and 6-month follow-up\nwas zero among the 13 patients who received prophylactic anti-seizure medications,\nand was 1 (7.7%) among the 13 patients who didnâ??t receive prophylactic\nanti-seizure medications. Conclusions: The incidence of post-operative\nseizures in patients with chronic subdural hematoma operated upon by burr\nholes evacuation is low. The administration of prophylactic antiepileptic\ndrugs decreases the incidence of seizures after evacuation of CSDH, but the\ndifference was not significant. So prophylactic antiepileptic drugs should not\nbe routinely given for all patients with CSDH operated upon by burr hole\nevacuation unless there is risk factor for seizure development....
Background: Globally, more than 450 million people suffer from a mental or behavioral disorder. Psychiatric disorder\nand its duration, physical illness, family history of mental illness, previous suicidal attempt, unemployment, poor social\nsupport, and psychotic symptoms are of the main reasons enabling patients to be suicidal ideates. The purpose of this\nstudy is to identify the determinants of suicidal ideation among patients with mental disorders in Mekelle, Ethiopia.\nMethods: Caseâ??control study design was employed with a total of 221 study subjects (74 cases and 147 controls) in\nMekelle, Ethiopia. Suicidal ideation was measured by the Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R) scale. Bivariate\nand multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to determine between the independent and dependent\nvariables.................
Background: Cystic meningioma is a rare variety of meningioma. It\nrepresents 4% to 7% of all meningiomas. The authors report a case of\nintracranial cystic meningioma with a review of literature. Case Report: A\n59-year-old female presented with a history of headache followed by left side\nhemiplegia. CT scan and MRI of the brain showed a right parietal tumor with\ndouble solid and cystic components thought to be pilocytic astrocytoma or\nmetastasis preoperatively. At surgery, the extraaxial solid and cystic lesion\nhad a well defined capsule that could be easily separated from the perilesional\ncortical surface. The tumor was totally removed and the cyst was punctioned.\nThe histological study showed a cystic meningioma WHO Grade I. A\nfollow-up at 10 months after surgery, the patient was going well and\nrecovered from the hemiplegiaa. Conclusion: Cystic meningioma is an\nuncommon tumor that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of\nbrain tumors with a cystic component. The preoperative diagnosis and\nmanagement could be in some cases challenging....
Background: In a context of the potential epidemic nature of both diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression had negative\neffects in cases of disability and mortality. Coexisting depression had been linked to morbidity and mortality in\npeople with diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify psychosocial and clinical factors associated to develop\ndepression symptoms in diabetes patients.\nMethods: A systematic institution based cross-sectional study design was conducted from 1st March to 8th April\n2016 among adult diabetes patent. Depression status was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9).\nData were analyzed by logistic regression and at................
Background: Spontaneous descent of the CSF (Cerebrospinal fluid) from the\nnose is called rhinorrhea. The causes are defects in bones of the base or meningeal\ntear. The surgical management is still a challenge. The surgical repair\nis a must to prevent the complication which could be brain abscess, meningitis,\nor pneumocephalus. The available surgical management is either transnasal,\nor transcranial. The endonasal route represents an easy access but\nequally aggressive alternative and of limited access. Objective: We reviewed\nthe clinical outcomes of thirteen cases of spontaneous CSF leakage managed\nby transcranial intradural approach. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective\nstudy about the records of 13 patients who underwent transcranial\nintradural approach as a surgical management for spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea\nin our department in the period between November 2017 and October\n2019. Results: CSF leakage stopped after initial surgery in 12 of 13 patients,\ngiving a success rate of 92.3%. The remaining case did not agree for new surgery\nand the case resolved without surgery for this patient. Postoperative\ncomplications included superficial wound infection in one patient, and\nanosmia in one patient. No other neurological problems were encountered\nover the ten-monthsâ?? follow-up period. Conclusion: The transcranial route is\nthe treatment of choice for patients with anterior cranial fossa spontaneous\nCSF rhinorrhea. A satisfactory surgical outcome depends on exact diagnosis,\nproper operative approach, and the surgeonâ??s skills and experience....
